This database contains the sequences of gene encoded antimicrobial peptides and proteins. It also includes, when available, the sequences of precursors and of putative antimicrobial peptides as deduced from DNA sequencing. It is oriented towards peptides of animal and plant sequences. Peptides and proteins of bacterial origin are not included.

Most of the entries in AMSDb are correlated to those in the SWISS-PROT protein sequences database to wich they are hyperlinked. Its format has been maintained, and the SWISS-PROT and AMSDb IDs sometimes coincide. However, entries for a particular sequence do NOT neccessarily correspond exactly to the latest Swiss-Prot entry. The database is extended with sequences obtained from the literature, from literature searches, or from translates of nucleic acid sequences as present in the EMBL database.

The annotations are a subset of those present in SWISS-PROT, with a few added annotations concerning a presently accepted structure-based classification of antimicrobial peptides and information about activity.

The database was originally created as part of the thesis work of undergraduate students, under the supervision of Dr. Alex Tossi. More recently it has been updated and maintained within the framework of the European "PANAD" (Peptides As Novel Antiinfective Drugs) Project (European 5th framework programme, project N° QLK2-CT-2000-00411).
Although the information present in the database is carefully checked, errors inevitably occur (disclaimer) Should you find any discrepancies, incorrect annotations or sequence information please contact us at tossi@bbcm.univ.trieste.it

We do not have the manpower to continously correct, augment and update this database. We would thus appreciate comments and submission of new entries by e-mail. An automated form has been provided to facilitate entry creation.
